IT'S COMPLICATED: HOW TO COPE WITH MULTIPLE NARRATIVES IN THE MUSEUM?

10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

Angela Manders and Arja van Veldhuizen

This workshop is about a more dynamic approach towards museum objects and displays, and of culture heritage in general. How do we deal with multiple perspectives and a variety of narratives, without leaving our audiences in confusion? How do we balance communicating knowledge and expertise on the one hand and opinions and emotions on the other? And what is the role of the educator in this context? How can we support our visitors/users to survive in an increasingly complex world, how can we give them the tools they need to critique and analyze the information they're being given?

This workshop draws on current research in the Netherlands by professor Hester Dibbits (Reinwardt and Erasmus University Rotterdam), focusing on how interpretations and appreciation of heritage is influenced by society today and by personal histories, views and emotions people.

It will be an interactive workshop, so your own input is most welcome. It will be great to share with our international colleagues our ideas and experiences of this issue. We look forward to meeting you and engaging in debate.
